Dans les Pyrénées Orientales, octobre 1971. Pierre Barrès s’apprête à faire descendre comme chaque automne son troupeau de l’estive vers sa ferme de La Renardière. Lorsqu’il apprend que son frère Roger aurait été aperçu dans le pays, le passé resurgit. Ils s’étaient tous les deux engagés dans la Résistance pendant la guerre, au grand dam de leur père. Roger a mystérieusement disparu dans des circonstances troubles, une nuit de juin 1943, alors qu’ils faisaient passer la frontière espagnole à un groupe d’évadés et de sinistres rumeurs de trahison ont alors couru.
